Parliament’s Economic and Finance Committee has recommended the South Australian Government reinstate a payroll tax exemption for apprentices and trainees.

The committee, chaired by Labor’s Lyn Breuer, considered ways to improve the tax system and said there was a perception South Australia had unfavourable tax settings compared with other states.

Among the committee’s 36 recommendations was to reinstate the payroll tax exemption for trainees and apprentices, which was abolished two years ago.

The committee found the exemption previously delivered a $53 million benefit to business and restoring the tax break would help get apprentices and trainees into jobs.
